  Dunstable Town Hall Renovation

Dunstable, Masschusetts
2004 Preservation Award, Massachusetts Historical Commission

The Sarah R.S. Roby Memorial Building/Town Hall, built in 1907 is a prominent civic building listed on both State and National Registers of Historic Places. MKA was commissioned originally in 1999 to conduct a building assessment survey, develop stabilization repairs and use plan for the Town of Dunstable. In 2002, The Town voted to conduct repairs and renovations to provide accessibility to the physically challenged, and to provide life safety and overall comfort of the building’s users.

The building’s exterior repairs involved replacement of missing roof slate and worn copper flashings and cleaning and repointing of the masonry walls. The building was sensitively reconfigured to provide needed life safety egress and accessibility. An elevator was installed to provide access to the multiple floor levels. Toilet rooms were reconfigured to meet current fixture requirements and to provide accessibility. The building’s main auditorium was restored to accommodate civic assembly and events. New plumbing, electrical, communications, fire protection and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems were installed to update the building to function as a modern office and assembly facility.
