  West Hall (Tufts University) Receives
Paul E. Tsongas Preservation Award

May 2011: Tufts University was the recipient of Preservation Massachusetts' Paul E. Tsongas Preservation Award at a special dinner on May 4 at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. Tufts was recognized for the restoration of West Hall dormitory and its ongoing efforts to preserve and restore historic and character defining features on its central campus. The 2011 Preservation Awards dinner recognized 21 educational institutions in Massachusetts that have played extraordinary roles in the promotion of preservation in MA.

McGinley Kalsow & Associates led the team that restored the 1871 dormitory designed by Levi Newcomb. West Hall was both a dormitory and home to the Divinity School. Since 1892 it has been used exclusively as a dormitory including use during World War I as dormitories for the New Hampshire and Vermont Regiment. By this time the building's ridge cresting had been removed. Over the following decades the building's polychromatic slate became black asphalt shingles, fire escapes were added and its Nova Scotia sandstone trim started to deteriorate. Extensive repairs and restoration were undertaken with the direction of McGinley Kalsow & Associates. This work meticulously replicated the original polychromatic slate roof with its copper ridges, ridge cresting and decorative finials. The challenge of accurately replicating the original decorative roof was met by carefully counting slate courses and individual diamond slates on historic photographs. Obsolete fire escapes were removed; severely deteriorated Nova Scotia sandstone replaced with new stone from the same quarry and brick masonry was repaired and repointed. One hundred thirty years of exterior paint build-up was removed from the woodwork and the original paint color replicated.

Phoenix Bay State Construction, masonry subcontractors, and Gilbert & Becker Roofing, roofing and sheet metal subcontractors, demonstrated a very high level of craftsmanship. In 2007 the restoration work was recognized nationally with the MCAA International Masonry Award.
