Wendall Kalsow Presents at BPA and SNEAPPA Conferences

November 2010: MKA Principal Wendall Kalsow presented at a workshop organized by the Boston Preservation Alliance on the Preservation of Religious Properties. Over 100 religious leaders, parishioners and building committee members from Boston Area churches packed the First Presbyterian Church in Roxbury to learn about building maintenance, preservation, fundraising, energy saving practices and stained glass window preservation. Mr. Kalsow's presentation focused on building maintenance, specifically envelope assessment.

Mr. Kalsow also presented at SNEAPPA's conference for facilities managers, held at Boston College. Together with John Romeo, Director of Capital Construction at Boston College, Wendall presented a case study on the restoration work already completed and a new phase currently underway at Boston College's Gasson Hall. Phase One involved the restoration of the masonry and roofs of the 175-foot landmark tower: the spires were dismantled and completely reconstructed with new cast stone to replicate the original. Elsewhere on the tower, deteriorated cast stone was removed and replaced with new replica cast stone and Roxbury Puddingstone walls were repaired, cleaned and repointed. Phase Two is currently under construction involves comprehensive repairs to the lower four floors of the building. This phase includes replacement of over 6,000 pieces of cast stone, accessibility improvements, new windows, roofing and associated site improvements. The work will be completed in August 2011 in time for the building to reopen for Fall classes.
