Newburyport City Hall receives 2008 MHC Preservation Award

May, 2008: Newburyport City Hall received a 2008 Preservation Award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission at a special ceremony at the Massachusetts Archive. Secretary Galvin presented the award on May 29th for the exterior restoration of the 1851 building. The City Hall is listed in the State Register of Historic Places. The building is a good example of the Italian Villa style interpreted in public buildings in the mid 19th century. The building has been in continuous public use as the focal point of municipal government and civic life for the City of Newburyport for over a century. McGinley Kalsow & Associates led the restoration project funded with support from an MHC MPPF grant, Community Preservation Act and City funding. The Newburyport City Hall was recognized with a 2007 Historical Preservation Award from the Newburyport Historical Commission. The project has readied the building for the next century, fulfilling the demands of a modern municipal building while restoring and retaining its historic architectural character and materials.
